Chapter Thirteen

Ryan looked like pure sex and sinfulness, and Sloane was acutely aware of how dangerous those things were when paired together. Because she couldn’t fall for someone who would put his career before her. Who would expect her to pack up and move whenever the job called for it.

She’d worked so freaking hard to be part of this place. To build a solid foundation under her feet where she could set down roots and grow a life. A life that was safe and stable and grounded in comforting sameness.

But the second he’d set foot into her house, Sloane couldn’t seem to find her anchor of sensibility. And no, it wasn’t the sex that had knocked her for a loop. For all her joking about “chapter twenty-one,” Sloane needed more than physical stamina and a hot body and excellent hip mobility. She needed more, even, than true crackling chemistry.

She needed connection.

And being his arms…she felt connected to him. Tonight, working on something together, she felt connected to him. Laughing with his family and friends, she felt connected to him. It was like the universe was telling her she was meant to be here, in this moment, with him. Touching him, kissing him, wanting him…and well, it felt as natural as the sun rising.

“Why did you stop?” she whispered, looking up at him.

“I’m making sure you’re okay.”

She sucked in a breath. “I’m not delicate.”

“I’ve never once seen you as delicate,” he said with a warm smile. “You’re like a tiny rainbow hurricane.”

“I’m not that tiny. You’re just absurdly tall for a human being,” she teased.

“Absurdly tall, huh? Do you like tall men?”

“I do.”

Hell, putting aside his single-minded career drive, she had a weakness for all things Ryan Bower. His stature, the sculpted muscle all over his body, his intense blue eyes, and the way his cheek got the tiniest little dent in it when he smiled.

She was weak for it all.

“And do you have a weakness for dino nerds with dirty reading habits?” she asked.

“I never expected to have a weakness for anything or anyone. That’s not how I got to where I am.” With those few words, Ryan’s joking tone was gone, replaced by smoldering heat and that razor-edged intensity that she’d already come to crave. “And yet I find myself thinking about the ways you drive me wild.”

“Tell me.”

His lips brushed over her skin. “How you’re so vibrant and full of life. How you like making an impact on this place. How you really want to be a good friend.”

The words warmed her deep inside—because they weren’t the obvious, outward things. Sloane had always made herself memorable with her clothes and her bubbly personality and her quirkiness. But he mentioned the other, truer things that were below the surface. Which meant he’d been looking closely.

She wasn’t sure what else to say—because the right thing would be to say stop. Ryan wasn’t her dream man. He didn’t fit into her dream life, and she didn’t fit into his. But walking away now would be…impossible.
